First Aid at Sea (REC level 2)
This course is created especially for yachtsmen, yachtswomen, and dinghy sailors.
Jo has lived, worked and raced on sailing yachts, as crew member and medic. As a Yachtmaster, Jo has a good understanding of emergency procedures and communications at sea. Combining her personal and industry experience, Jo has adapted this REC level 2 course to the sailing environment.
This 2 day (16hr) course is most suited to sailors who are planning long passages, offshore racing, or deliveries. We follow on from the 1 day course, adding more topics, such as wound care, wound closure, sudden illness, etc and we have plenty of time to practice. This course will give you the confidence to care for an ill crew member until help arrives or until you can make it to shore.
This course meets the first aid training requirements of Irish Sailing and the RYA for sailing instructors, and for the Irish Sailing and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore first aid component. It also meets the requirement for the senior first aid certificate for offshore racers subject to ISAF regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4) and also the Royal Life Saving Association. The course includes CPR, cold water shock, immersion and drowning.
We sailors often fool ourselves, thinking that if we can see the shore, we can get there quickly if needs be. With an injured crew member on board, the time to sail into a suitable port can seem like an eternity. The course can be tailored to your exact needs, also taking in cruising itinerary into account, and specific medical risks present in those areas.
Certification
On successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a Remote Emergency Care (REC 2) certificate, which is valid for 2 years.
